C. 2300 BCE TO THE 2020S

The strongest militaries in history, ranked

The top 3 to 5 state armies of every century, then of every decade from the 1820s. checked july 2026 state armies only

This page ranks the strongest militaries in history. It covers every century from around 2300 BCE, then every decade from the 1820s, when yearly records of army sizes begin. Each period names the top three state armies, or up to five when the next ones were close behind. The rankings are Claude's judgment, an AI model's reading of the record, checked against published scholarship in July 2026. The map on the right shows where each ranked power held territory and updates as you scroll. The page's name comes from a saying Voltaire repeated: God is on the side of the big battalions.

One limitation matters. Good records exist for state armies. No comparable records exist for militias, raiders and other irregular forces, in any period. So this page ranks state armies only. Where irregular forces changed history anyway, like the Sea Peoples, the Vikings and the Taiping, they appear separately: a dashed area on the map and a boxed note in the timeline, never a rank, because there are no numbers to rank them with.
